Phagwah!

So Phagwah is a holiday that my family celebrates. It is the celebration of COLOR. In India, they call it Holi. I’m not from India, I’m from Guyana, I call it Phagwah.

Phagwah is basically one of the most fun holidays in the world and it’s not difficult to celebrate with your loved ones. As is the case with many other Hindu holidays, you’re not supposed to eat meat, but fear not; the vegetarian dishes served on this day would satisfy even the most stubborn carnivore.

The second thing that you do to celebrate is take colored powder or dye and throw it all over each other! Since we didn’t have the same colored powder and dyes available in the United States, we’ve used baby powder in the past.

I've done the Color Run before and I believe whoever created it got their inspiration DIRECTLY from this religious holiday. I also feel like they didn't give proper credit for taking the idea because I've spoken to a number of people who have done that run, but don't know of Phagwah or Holi.

I feel like it’s cool that in Hinduism, they celebrate things like color, light, relationships, etc. instead of just celebrating people. So get out there and add some color into your life today and if you can’t find any, white baby powder definitely counts!
